At Power Counseling PLLC, we understand the important role emotional support animals can play in promoting comfort, stability, and emotional well-being. We offer professional Emotional Support Animal (ESA) evaluations for individuals seeking ESA documentation as part of their mental health support plan.

Our licensed clinicians provide compassionate, confidential, and clinically appropriate assessments through secure HIPAA-compliant virtual appointments, allowing clients to complete the evaluation process online from the comfort and privacy of their home.

ESA evaluations are available for adults, adolescents ages 13–17, military personnel, and veterans located in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey. Clients must be physically located in one of these states at the time of their appointment.

If clinically appropriate, clients may receive an ESA recommendation letter to support housing-related accommodation requests under applicable federal and state guidelines. Please note that completion of an evaluation does not guarantee approval or issuance of an ESA letter, as recommendations are based on clinical judgment, clinical need, and applicable laws and professional standards.

Please note that emotional support animals are different from psychiatric service animals and do not receive the same public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Power Counseling PLLC does not provide ESA certifications, registrations, or guarantees of housing approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What qualifies someone for an ESA evaluation?

Individuals experiencing emotional or mental health-related symptoms that substantially impact daily functioning may qualify for an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) evaluation. Eligibility is determined through a clinical assessment conducted by a licensed mental health professional and is based on clinical need, current symptoms, and applicable guidelines.

  • Is the evaluation completed online?

Yes. ESA evaluations are conducted through secure HIPAA-compliant virtual appointments, allowing clients to complete the process online from the comfort and privacy of their home.

  • How long does the appointment take?

Most ESA evaluations take approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on the individual’s clinical history, concerns, and assessment needs.

  • Are ESA letters valid for apartments and housing?

If clinically approved, ESA letters may support reasonable housing accommodation requests under applicable federal and state fair housing guidelines. However, approval decisions are ultimately made by housing providers in accordance with applicable laws and policies.

  • What is the difference between an ESA and a service animal?

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides comfort and emotional support related to a mental health condition but is not individually trained to perform specific tasks. Service animals are specially trained to perform tasks directly related to a person’s disability and are granted broader public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

  • How quickly are letters issued if approved?

If clinically appropriate and approved, ESA letters are typically issued within 1–3 business days following the completed evaluation and any required documentation review.
