About DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s. It was originally designed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted for a variety of other mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and PTSD.
In DBT, clients are encouraged to accept their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors as valid, while also working on changing problematic patterns. This Group will focus on skills training: clients will learn and practice four main skills modules:
Mindfulness: Developing awareness and being present in the moment without judgment.
Distress Tolerance: Learning to tolerate and manage emotional distress without resorting to harmful behaviors.
Emotional Regulation: Managing and understanding intense emotions to reduce emotional suffering.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Improving communication and relationship skills, including how to ask for needs to be met while maintaining self-respect.
DBT is distinct from other forms of therapy because it places a heavy emphasis on validation (acknowledging the client's feelings and experiences as real and understandable) while also encouraging behavioral change. This combination of acceptance and change helps clients feel heard and supported while learning skills to manage their emotions and behaviors more effectively.
Dyanne’s DBT group therapy experience started in 2015, as director at a women’s and children residential program in Philadelphia. Since moving to and providing therapy in the DMV area, she has utilized DBT treatment via individual and group sessions for adults with mental health issues, addiction, and justice involvement.
In Dyanne’s years of providing group therapy, DBT has shown to be especially effective for individuals with all types of traumas, emotion regulation difficulties, relationship dynamics, self-esteem, self-perception, and addictions, it is considered a gold-standard treatment for people with suicidality and borderline personality disorder.
